activity which has an associated cost, you will be held accountable if payment
is made on your behalf (and no replacement can be found in time). Please let me

Tues., Aug. 26th, 6 pm – 9 pm: Adventure Dinner: Brazilian Rio BBQ. 473 Massachusetts Ave, Arlington. (781) 483-3063. Review from Boston Globe: Rio Brazilian is a new restaurant that opened Aug. 29 under the ownership of Jaspal and Gurinder Pabla, who also operate Punjab Fine Indian Cuisine, located two storefronts away in Arlington Center. Despite limited space, Rio Brazilian has a wide assortment of offerings, served up by friendly waitstaff who can explain simply the nuances of Brazilian cuisine. "We're a small restaurant that does a lot," asserted Dan Souza, a Brazilian who is the restaurant's general manager. "We work hard to make this a truly Brazilian restaurant," he added, noting that the nearest competitor is in Cambridge. And on a recent weeknight, in a full house, we worked hard on deciding which appetizers, entrees, and desserts to sample. For starters, we ordered a fried red snapper ($16) and fried shrimp with a coconut crust ($9). We then studied the entrees, which include fish stew with a variety of vegetables laced with dende oil and coconut milk ($10); duck legs in orange sauce with rice ($15); and a rabbit stew cooked in a red wine sauce and accompanied by mixed vegetables ($18). But we selected the pièce de résistance of Brazilian cuisine - the rodizio churrasco, or roasted meats brought to the table on skewers. The offerings on this night were chicken wings, chicken breast, chicken heart, top sirloin, pork sirloin, beef ribs, kielbasa, Brazilian sausage, and lamb (each for $22, including self-serve buffet items.) "I think I'll pass on the chicken heart," my daughter said. "What you mean is that you'd probably pass out if you had it," my son-in-law said. "You have that right," she said. My daughter blanched a bit when the red snapper, head and all, was served. "Oh, my," she said, changing her tune, however, when flaky, well-seasoned pieces were scooped out from under the bones. "Very tasty," she said. The other appetizer, the coconut shrimp, was also flavorful, though the shrimp were tiny. More crust than shrimp, it seemed. Before digging into the roasted meats, we helped ourselves to buffet items such as rice, sweet potatoes, and fruit salad, all of them appetizing. We agreed, however, that the rice and potatoes could have been hotter. (The restaurant also has a takeout menu featuring hot and cold buffet items plus prime-cut meats, priced at $5 for the buffet offerings and $6 per pound for the meats.) Of the meats that we ordered table-side, the top sirloin, chicken breast meat and chicken wings, and sausages were our favorites because of their seasonings and succulence. The beef ribs and lamb pieces were a bit dried out. We still had some room for desserts, which are flan Brazilian, passion fruit mousse, cheesecake, and tiramisu, each priced at $5. We decided to sample the flan and the mousse, with the spongy-like flan with a chocolate icing and a caramel flavoring getting our top rating. Although the Rio Brazilian lacks a fine-dining atmosphere, it can boast about fine eating in a storefront setting. Perhaps we'll return for some traditional American and Brazilian breakfasts, which were added to the menu last week. Please RSVP in case I need to make reservations. (There are many places in Lowell (88 Pho-Vietnamese, Red Rose-Cambodian, etc., but I’ve gotten quite a few “complaints” about driving so far away, so we will make these adventure dinners in conjunction with activities planned in the future in Lowell.)
Thurs., Aug 28th, 1 pm - 4 pm: Bridge and Mah Jongg. Held at Randy's house (enter through gate next to driveway as we are now playing in the pool house.) Please park on one side of the street on John Poulter, or in front of the house on Worthen Road (ignore the no parking signs, you won't get a ticket). Light refreshments served. Bring a bathing suit and towel if you’d like to swim or use the hot tub. No RSVP, just show up.
